Week 3: Broken But Not Defeated

Insert Drawing :)

Broken but not defeated. That’s pretty much how you can sum up the week. Both my legs are bandaged up and I’m on a course of antibiotics at the moment. My right leg is still recovering from the exhaust burn from Week 1, when I was drunk, barefoot and lost in Phuket. The story of my left leg is not quite as interesting, however. I had a small cut which somehow got infected. In a matter of days, my leg was swollen and it was hard to walk. I think I even had a fever. Fortunately, pharmacists here are like drug dealers and eagerly prescribe high dosages of antibiotics. Part of me wishes I had left at the end of Week 2.

The other part of me thinks it’s hilarious that I’m at training with bandaged up legs. It makes me look like a bad ass. Besides, when you have people older than you doing the same training plus running 8 kms a day to “warm-up”, it’s pretty hard to complain.

Costs

Apart from accommodation and training, these were the additional costs that I incurred (in USD) for the week.

Food: 1679 THB ($56)
I ate out a bit more, mainly to be social. I am in Thailand after all! I also checked out a Raw Food cafe for the first time ever, which was expensive by local standards. The food was pretty amazing actually.

Transport: 1200 THB ($40)
I rented the scooter for another week and still had plenty of gas from the week before. I guess I should do more exploring!

Massages: 500 THB ($17)
I only had two massages, both being Thai massages. I wanted to get more but with my legs the way they are, I thought it was best not to.

Supplements: 0 THB ($0)
I still had plenty of Jack3d pre-workout and Dymatize Elite Whey Protein Isolate, so I didn’t have to spend anymore.

Booze: 0 THB ($0)
I still managed to stay in the “zone” and not drink at all. DESPITE the free shots of tequila which were offered on Saturday night. Why do I always seem to get offerred free booze whenever I’m on a break from it??

Medical Supplies: 1028 THB ($35)
I had to get plenty of medical supplies for my injuries.

Total additional expenses = 4407 THB ($147)
Total additional expenses for Week 1, 2 & 3 = 10290 + 7355 + 4407 = 22052 THB ($736)

Despite the unexpected expenses from my injuries, I’ve spent less this week than in the previous two weeks. This is mainly because I was stocked up on many of the things I needed.

I thought I would be done by the end of the week but looks like I’m going to be here for one final week. So, stay tuned for Week 4!

About Me

In 2004, I sold everything I owned and left New Zealand to go see the world. In that time, I've run with bulls, watched the Man burn, volunteered at a special-needs summer camp, hosted & couchsurfed with 100+ people, taught English, trained with Muay Thai fighters, worked on cruise ships, hugged strangers on the street and this one time, I even hitchhiked naked. I've recently moved to Vancouver, BC to embark on a new adventure. Let's keep in touch: @roymarvelous, facebook & RSS. Love you long time :)

Roy!! Good to see you are alive and kicking still. It’s been a while since I’ve read up on your adventures but I’m delighted to see that you are still living it up.
Now you are in Asia and I’m in North America!! Best of luck with the injuries.

What are you doing in North America? My time in Asia is up – heading back to the Caribbean now.

That doesn’t seem too bad as far as costs go! But uh, yeah… the pain thing doesn’t sit well with me. I’m not badass enough!

    Roy Marvelous

Yeah, I think it’s pretty good especially since I’ve been living it up!

Having your legs bandaged up would definitely earn you badass points. …or not… when I play a tennis player with a bandage, I think “Target.” haha no not really, but I do think it will be easier to defeat them. Hope those legs get better soon!

    Roy Marvelous

Haha, maybe. Or maybe I’m just crazy enough to keep going ;)

That’s awesome that you’re sticking it out for another week. I just started working on a travel “bucket list” and doing Muay Thai training is definitely on the list.

    I definitely recommend it!
