We were Valparaiso today. It’s embark day and we’re on our reposition to Alaska. Basically cruise ships spend a season doing laps around one area and towered the end of that season, they reposition to another area.
Valparaiso is an interesting place – it’s very hilly and Mediterranean-looking. It was a sunday so there were open markets everywhere selling everything from detergent and handbags, to huge pumpkins and fresh fish. I had a spicy beef empanada and a drink that tasted like a piña colada without the alcohol.
After walking around the markets for a bit, I remembered that I didn’t actually know any Spanish apart from “ola” and “si”. So I went to a tourist information center to get some tips. I was told that I needed to take the “ascension” which is kind of like a a tram that goes up the hill.
At the top of the hill were gorgeous panoramic views, cute little shops and rustic old houses. I went to get some ice-cream and tried a whole bunch of flavors (including “Valparaiso” which tastes like coconut) before settling on chocolate. I’m open-minded about eating and drinking pretty much anything. I’ve had fried grasshoppers in Bangkok and BBQ whale in Reykjavik but when it comes to ice-cream I always stick with chocolate.
